100 free classical concerts
From tonight will be a long weekend of classical concerts all over Nice. There will be open-air concerts in the piazzas such as Place Massena and Place Garibaldi, all the way through to full orchestras in the Opera house. This is classical for the people, so leave the tux and tails at home and enjoy France’s finest musicians for free!
Tonight in the Opera House, master maestro Philippe Auguin will be directing the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra. The composer will be principally Mozart. At points during the concert members of the audience will be invited to lead the orchestra. The event web site tells us there are no longer any free tickets but it may be worth turning up in case others do not.
On Friday night 8.30pm will be François René Duchabl playing Liszt in the Acropolis, followed by the hottest classical talents from the music academies in Nice and Cannes playing under the direction of maestro Philippe Bender. A highlight has to be the “Spiritual Concert” in the spectacular Saint Reparte church in Place Rossetti, in the heart of Old Nice. Here a dozen male vocalists promise to explore harmonies you will not have experienced before.
Starting Saturday lunch time there will be concerts all over Nice. The full list is here. Our picks are from 2.15pm in Place Garibaldi (and 4pm moving to Place Massena) will be an orchestra on bicycles playing Gershwin, and the Gospel choir playing in the Acropolis. In fact head to the Acropolis during the afternoon and nearly every hall will have a different concert playing in it!
Sunday sees the same packed Acropolis, reverberating with every classical style from every hall. At 2pm there is Chopin, 3.30pm Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, followed by Liszt, Schumann, Mozart, and more. Of note is “A Hommage to Pavarotti”, a must for opera lovers at 5pm. For those that prefer the fresh air, the Nice Harmonic Orchestra will be playing at 3.45pm in the Port.
