Ikea targets Nice for 2013
After the mayor of Mouans-Sartoux blocked Ikea from opening next to Mougins, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, is keen for them to open a site around Nice. Music to the ears of many, with a Facebook group “Pour un Ikea à Nice” already having around 2,500 members.
After the battle was won by the mayor of Mouans-Sartoux, who compared Ikea to a disease that he managed to fight from infecting his community, any further appeals by Ikea failed. This was much to the disappointment of the mayor of Mougins next door, Richard Galy, who had been championing the project for the past three years.
Instead, the massive site and all the jobs and revenue it will bring is welcomed by the Nice mayor if a suitable site can be found. The boost to the local economy will be well timed. If no local site can be found then just over the Italian border is also an option, but Ikea has declared a preference to have it on the French Riviera. This will be a relief to the many local residents vocally fed up with having to drive to Toulon each time.
