After being approved a couple of months ago as an official stadium for the Euro 2016 Championships, the new stadium has passed the last administrative hurdle and can begin construction.

The new 35,000 seat football stadium will be amongst those used during the prestigious Euro 2016 Football games. The stadiums used will be: Paris, Saint-Denis, Marseille, Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux, Lille, Nancy and Lens.

Designed by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, this spectacular stadium will have 16,000m² of solar panels, 30,000m² of shopping, and a museum of sports with over 100,000 memorabilia. The estimated cost of the project is €245M. It will be built by Vinci and it should be completed in June 2013.

The State recently granted planning permission, and the council finally approved the plans last week. Not without some healthy debate from the Communist and Green parties though! Every issue was scrutinised from the impact on the environment to potential congestion. The final sticking point of insufficient parking was solved by Vinci promising at the last minute to build 2,000m² more.

Construction work will start this month.
